Abstract:
Der Ausgangspunkt des Beitrags ist die Behauptung von Czermińska, dass der Essay keine autobiografische Gattung sei. Am Beispiel des Schaffens von Czesław Miłosz wird das autobiografische Potential des Essays in drei Dimensionen dargestellt: es sind Autobiografie, Selbstporträt und geistige Autobiografie. Diese Einteilung ist dialektisch. Die geistige Autobiografie bildet die Synthese als vollkommene Verbindung des essayistischen und autobiografischen Elements.

The inspiration for this article is the statement by Czermińska that the essay cannot be regarded as an autobiographical genre. On the
writing by Czesław Miłosz an autobiographical potential of the essay is depicted in three main dimensions: autobiography, self-portrait and inner autobiography. This division is dialectical, where the inner autobiography constitutes the synthesis as the fullest combination of essayistic and autobiographical element.
